WHAT IS CVI?

Chronic Venous Insufficiency (CVI), also known as Chronic Venous Disease (CVD), happens when leg veins cannot pump enough blood back to the heart. Four kinds of veins are affected, which include the following:

1

Superficial veins, which lie close to the skin

2

Deep veins, which lie in groups of muscles

3

Perforating veins, which connect the superficial to the deep veins

4

Deep veins lead to the vena cava, your body’s largest vein, that runs to your heart

Symptoms of CVI

These include but are not limited to swollen ankles, calf tightness, and heavy legs. You may also feel pain while walking or shortly after stopping. CVI is usually associate with varicose veins, which tend to be swollen and can be seen through the skin. These veins are blue, bulging, and twisted in appearance. Larger ones may lead to redness, rashes, and sores. CVI may also cause problems with swelling due to blood pooling.

Causes of CVI

CVI usually occurs when blood pressure that is higher than normal inside your leg veins. This may lead to damaged valves, which may aggravate the problem. In some cases, the valves may be congenitally defective. If left untreated or undetected, CVI may cause leg swelling and blood clots may break off and travel to the lungs.

Diagnosis of CVI

First, a physician will conduct a physical exam. He or she will determine the blood pressure in your legs and assess the varicose veins. To confirm a CVI diagnosis, the physician may request a duplex ultrasound test or a venogram. The former allows the physician to measure the blood flow speed and to view your leg veins’ structure. On the other hand, the latter gives your physician a glimpse of your veins’ anatomy.

Sclerotherapy Treatment

A series of microinjections of a solution (“sclerosant”) are administered directly into varicose veins or spider veins. The injected solution closes off veins with abnormal valves. Over time, the treated veins shrink and are eventually absorbed by your body.

Radio Frequency Ablation

The doctor inserts a small catheter into the diseased vein through a small incision using ultrasound guidance for an accurate and live view. Consistent and uniform heat is delivered to contract the collagen in the vein walls causing them to collapse and close.
